Women Artists

In 1987, Congress designated the month of March as Women’s History Month. Its purpose is to highlight the contributions and achievements of women throughout history and in contemporary society. Celebrating Women's History Month is one way to promote equality.

Only 13% of artists in major American art museum collections are women, even though 55% of artists today are women. We are proud that 45% of all artists in Washington’s State Art Collection are women.

Learn about the history of women by exploring their stories through art from Washington’s State Art Collection.
