Uncharted, 2023

Gabrielle Abbott
(American, born 1986)

Location: Central Kitsap High School, Silverdale

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Uncharted by Gabrielle Abbott is a large mural showing an empty, symbolic rowboat in a surreal landscape. Abbott notes, "It takes courage and determination to navigate the waters of an ever-changing world." The waves and the sun are stylized and patterned, in reference to Chinese and Japanese block prints that use similar styles.

Abbott designed the mural with pencil and watercolor paints on paper. Then she used digital illustration tools to create a detailed, to-scale mockup that she used to handpaint the final mural on wood panels.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Central Kitsap School District.
