ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Artist Ray Troll created the drawing Midnight Ritual after visiting the Native Arts Symposium on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska. He based many of the figures in the composition on Tlingit and Kwakiutl designs, masks, and poles. He then added images and patterns from his imagination. He notes, "The work itself is a blend of fact and fiction, reality and unreality. Hopefully this ambiguity helps to convey a mysterious aura to the individuals gathered under the full moon from some unnamed rite."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Wahluke School District.
