Year of the Snake: Happy Chinese Lunar New Year (2025)
In celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year (February 2, 2025) – the Year of the Snake – we are pleased to present a selection of artworks in the State Art Collection that feature snakey creatures.
The Year of the Snake in Chinese astrology is believed to bring abundance and prosperity. People born under the Snake sign are known for their intelligence and charm. They are sensitive and independent, maybe even secretive, quietly observing the world around them and carefully thinking things through. But they are also passionate and energetic when they need to be. They are great leaders and problem solvers, and they are good at understanding other people.
Stories of the Chinese Zodiac tell that the Jade Emperor held a race. The Snake and the Dragon were both good flyers, but the Dragon was expected to win. The cunning Snake hitched a ride on the Dragon’s tail and beat him to be the sixth animal in the Chinese Zodiac.
In Chinese astrology, each year is related to a Chinese zodiac animal according to a 12-year cycle. Those who were born in the years 2025, 2013, 2001, 1989, 1977, 1965, 1953, 1941, and 1929 are known as Snakes.
Happy Year of the Snake!
