ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sanctuary is a richly detailed and vibrant oil painting, created by artist Shani Marchant. The composition is filled with energetic letters and words, as well as birds, insects, a snake, and plants and flowers. We can see in the background that this "safe space" is enclosed by walls.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Central Valley School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Shani Marchant is a Spokane, Washington-based artist who creates expressive paintings and drawings that explore both figuration and abstraction.

Marchant received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Fort George Wright College (currently Spokane Falls Community College) in Spokane. She continued her studies in New York City at the Art Students League and Hunter College. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Marchant has taught art at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and at Spokane Falls Community College.
