ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Passages is an abstract sculpture created by artist Julia Kerl for Evergreen Middle School. She designed the sculpture as a passageway that students could walk under. She notes, "It also embodies junior high school and the student's passage from grade school to high school, from childhood to adolescence and into the journey of adulthood, each with its many changing points of view."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Lake Washington School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Washington artist Julia Kerl creates abstract metal sculptures for public places.
Kerl has served as an instructor of two and three-dimensional design at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Northwestern Washington. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington State University in Pullman, Eastern Washington, in 1969. She received a teaching certificate from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1972. She received a Master of Applied Art degree from Montana State University in Bozeman in 1977.
