ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Cresting the Rise II is part of artist Joyce Majiski's series of works about the migratory Porcupine Caribou Herd that live in the Yukon, far northern Canada. The caribou herd and surrounding environment are threatened by oil development.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Methow Valley School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artist Joyce Majiski's work examines our connection to the natural world, wild spaces, and environmental issues. She considers herself a printmaker but she also creates paintings, photography, letterpress, sculpture, and site-specific installations.
Majiski has been based in the Yukon Territory, in northern Canada, since 1984. She has also worked as a biologist and wilderness adventure guide in the Yukon. These experiences have contributed largely to her artistic practice and taken her to remote wild spaces.
