ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Sharing the Hoop is part of artist Jane Burns' series of paintings that feature twins. The circular composition depicts two figures in motion as they play with a Hula-Hoop. The movement implies that the characters support one another. The artist notes, “The twin on the left is on the verge of taking a step into unknown territory, symbolized by the black rectangle surrounding her left foot. She need not worry because her twin will either lift her back up with the hoop or she’ll accompany her on her journey. This sort of nonthreatening support and trust is the feeling I hope to communicate in the painting.”
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Spokane School District.
