ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Tukupana'a, The Birdcatcher is a mixed media sculpture by artist Shelley Moore. The artist created this piece after a year-long sailing trip to French Polynesia. The main form is a silhouette of a marine snail shell. It is painted with imagery that depicts a Polynesian story about a tribal bird catcher. She describes the bird catcher as "a man who was sent to live with and learn to understand the ways of the birds." The main snail form of this piece is painted with vibrantly colored images of many birds and the face of a man.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Highline School District.
