Sinking of the I-90 Bridge, 1991
John Moilanen
(American | Finnish, born 1948)
Location: Pine Tree Elementary, Kent
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In an expressive, abstract style, artist John Moilanen composed Sinking of the I-90 Bridge to emphasize a dynamic interaction of forms and elements. This piece references the original I-90 Bridge, built in 1940, which first connected Seattle to the east side of Lake Washington. A symbol of Seattle's growth, the bridge was used by over 5,000 cars a day. It sank to the bottom of the lake in 1990 while closed for renovation.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Kent School District.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
