ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Pinecone, Cyclone, Galaxy, Totality is a sculpture by artist Perri Lynch Howard. This artwork presents the Fibonacci sequence as an opportunity to teach math, art, and science as inter-related subjects. In math, the Fibonacci sequence is a pattern of numbers where each number is the sum of the two numbers before it. This pattern can be found in drawing and design, music and math, pinecones and cyclones. When the Fibonacci sequence is translated through geometry, it forms the beautiful spiral that you see in this artwork. If you look closely around you, the same spiral shape can be found all around us and especially in nature.

The local art selection committee wanted an artwork that would capture nature around them in North Mason County, while also being unique and interactive.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with North Mason School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Perri Lynch Howard's art examines the relationship between human perception and sense of place. Questions about navigation, intuition, and physical proximity are important factors in these investigations. Her public artworks draw attention to where land meets sky, sea meets shore, and where one’s inner landscape converges with the outside world. Her work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, and sound installations.

Lynch Howard earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. She is based in Twisp, North Central Washington.
