Katy Stone
(American, born 1969)

Location: Westview Elementary School, Spokane

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Ray by artist Katy Stone is made of hundreds of suspended lightweight, hand-painted and laser-cut, yellow aluminum shapes. All together they suggest a beam of sunlight and the west-facing school itself, Westview Elementary in Spokane. In the words of Katy Stone: “Referencing the natural force of light, this artwork symbolizes the reach and the illumination of education and the warmth and light of the sun."

Westview Elementary was designed to be a sanctuary for students, and to reflect the spirit of the natural world around it. Artist Katy Stone's two sculptures add to this connection to the surrounding world. The artworks are designed to represent life energy, movement, and flow. The artworks also represent the relationship of separate pieces to a whole, and the individual to the group. The partner artwork "Falls" symbolizes the active and forward-moving force of education.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Spokane Public Schools.
