Blue Angel, 1998

Denise Anderson
(American, born 1953)

Location: Lake Shore Elementary, Vancouver

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Blue Angel is a painting by artist Denise Anderson. She created the textured background using a comb-like tool before the paint dried. She then re-defined the figure with charcoal, and used stencils to create the letters and numbers. She describes the symbolism, noting, “A figure is walking into the depths of the sea full of letters and numbers, perhaps the sea of knowledge and understanding. What is seen of the arms suggests the movement of wings. A quest for the heights, as well as, the depths, and ultimately, a place of balance.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Vancouver School District.
