With a background in dance, artist Philip Lewis created Vortex to express a sense of motion using abstract line and color.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with North Thurston Public Schools.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Seattle-based artist Phillip Lewis creates artworks that investigate and translate movement from the physical to the visual. He trained in classical ballet, modern and jazz dance and was a professional dancer before becoming a visual artist.
Born in Lansing, Michigan, Lewis earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 1971. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington, Seattle in 1984.
