Virginia Paquette
(American, born 1947, died 2022)

Location: Washington State Arts Commission, Olympia

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Due is an expressive painting by artist Virginia Paquette. It is part of a series of artworks begun while the artist lived in Rome, Italy. The series explores themes of movement and mystery. The artist notes that the title is the Italian word for two. She states that this represents "the yin/yang relationship of the universe: the light and the dark. The flower image, a natural and personal symbol, is also a strong abstract shape with tumbles and bumps across the surface, some falling out of the plane which moves from light to dark (or day to night) floating in an out, closed and open spaces."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Reardan-Edwall School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

The late Seattle-based artist Virginia Paquette created paintings and conceptual public art installations. She stated that the primary urge in her work is "to make marks, images, symbols that will communicate to you a message, feeling, visual stimuli that may be pleasing or thought-provoking."
Paquette received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1976 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1978, both in painting, from the University of Washington in Seattle.
