ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Kufic Kazak is a detailed and colorful painting by artist Sidonie Caron. It is composed using Arabic newsprint fragments. She notes, "Kufic is a type of Arabic script and relates to the shapes on the border of the painting. Kazak is a particular type of rug usually with very bright colors in strict geometric shapes. The shapes in this painting have been achieved by over-printing with various cork or wood objects." Caron has long been fascinated by Islamic carpets and their infinite variety in design.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Enumclaw School District.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sidonie Caron creates abstract, landscape, and figurative paintings. She notes "I am an eclectic painter. I respond to life’s influences, my travels and my environment by making work that reflects all this."
Born in Germany and raised in England, Caron attended Saint Martins School of Art and Central School of Arts and Crafts (both in London, England). She emigrated to Portland, Oregon with her husband and children.
