Glacial Rhythms, 1979

Pamela Harlow
(American, born 1950)

Location: Washington Youth Academy, Bremerton

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Glacial Rhythms is an enamel mural created by artist Pamela Harlow. It is comprised of 53 sections. She created the imagery by firing painted enamel onto copper sheets in a kiln. Describing the ideas and imagery in this piece, Harlow notes, "Year by year, snow gathers. Small annual increments knit together, building depth, until snow fuses into ice and the sheet of ice begins to flow. As it moves, transverse crevasses open, offering ragged glimpses into blue depths, the heart of the glacier."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with University Place School District and the Military Department.
