ABOUT THE ARTIST

Late artist Charles W. Smith (1922-2009) founded the Industrial Design program at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved to Seattle in 1949 after studying at the Pratt Institute in New York. He served as the director of the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington until 1952, when he left Seattle to pursue his Master of Fine Arts degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. He taught at the University of Washington in Seattle for over forty years.
