ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Uncertainty is part of artist Toni Lawson Norris' series 'All God's Children.' This series developed from Norris's interest in painting children from diverse ethnic backgrounds. It also seeks to capture the open emotions and feelings expressed by children. The artist describes the subject of this portrait, noting, "She fiddles with her fingers nervously in a way only small children sometimes do when experiencing a wave of shyness and/or reluctance… Just what has transfixed her attention we can only imagine."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Vancouver School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artist Toni Lawson Norris creates figurative paintings and prints. She often paints from photographs and is interested in "capturing the feeling of the moment and transferring it onto paper."

Toni Lawson Norris was born in New York City and attended the NYC High School of Music & Art (now the LaGuardia High School of Music & the Arts). She studied art history and studio art at Columbia University in New York City. She also
