ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Birthday Party is an energetic two-paneled painting by artist James Deitz. He chose this composition to highlight the difference in two perspectives on the same event. He suggests that the place settings represent two individuals at "a crossroads in their relationship." He notes, "The place setting on the left signifies an individual who has a wish for things to remain the way they are, and is willing to play any role to insure this. The other place setting is the person who arrives bearing a gift, a wish for peace, and most importantly a desire for the relationship to move from an intimate one to a platonic friendship."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Wahluke School District.
