Not Kansas, 1991

Sally Sellers
(American, born 1951)

Location: Gold Bar Elementary, Gold Bar

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Not Kansas is part of artist Sally Sellers' body of quilts that experiment with technique, texture, and theme. Sellers began these experimental quilts after her young daughter moved from home to a nursing facility due to serious illness. She created this body of work as a form of therapy, as a meditation on control, and her maternal instincts to nurture and protect. This piece features “cut throughs,” a technique in which fabrics are cut and a different fabric is inserted before being sewn back together. She describes how “once the new fabric has been sewn in, it is treated as just another part of the surface for the next cut-through. The result is that the various cut-throughs overlap each other, adding texture and complexity.”

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Sultan School District.
