Jan Hoy
(American, born 1947)

Location: Walla Walla Veterans Home, Walla Walla

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Jan Hoy's sculpture dominates the central courtyard at the Walla Walla Veterans Home. In her own words, "no side has exactly the same dimensions which gives it a sense of movement even though it is very solid. The negative space in the center is also not a circle, but an ever changing ovoid shape that is at least as important and inviting to me as the outer structure. The outer form appears to hold the negative shape delicately on its side."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Department of Veterans Affairs.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artist Jan Hoy creates abstract sculptures that explore formal, geometric, and spatial relationships. She works in clay, steel, and bronze. In her own words, "By combining organic forms with a touch of linear I find the perfect counterpoint. My intention is to create forms that are satisfying in shape, simplicity, and balance." She is based on Whidbey Island, Northwestern Washington.
She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1970. She has taught courses at the University of Washington, Cornish College of the Arts, and Seattle Pacific University (all in Seattle), among other institutions.
