Night Flight, 2002

Judy Talley
(American, born 1935)

Location: Washington State Arts Commission, Olympia

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'Night Flight Pattern' is part of artist Judy Talley’s “Bird Series.” These prints combine shapes and textures to represent the movement, flight, and feather structure of birds. She notes, “The flight patterns represented are individual to every bird. Of all animals, birds are the most powerful flyers. Their wings may vary according to their shape and size but all are constructed similarly. Each flight pattern corresponds to a bird's needs; to pursue prey, escape enemies, or stay in flight for long periods of time.” This piece was created using lithography, a printmaking process in which a design is applied to a printing plate or stone. The artist chemically treats the plate to hold ink in designated areas, and then transfers the ink to paper using a printing press.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Franklin Pierce School District.
