ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Okanogan artist Harriet Louie hand-crafted these intricately beaded Gauntlets from buckskin. The gloves won first place at a 1981 Indian Art Show in Spokane, Washington. They were acquired from the artist's family in Omak, Washington.

This artwork is part of Beyond Blue Mountains, a collection that was curated by late Tlingit (Native Alaskan) artist Jim Schoppert. It presents the work of Native American artists of diverse heritage, ideas, materials, and styles. The collection takes an in-depth look at the artists’ unique voices and interpretations of tradition.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Department of Corrections.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Indigenous Okanogan artist Harriet Louie created traditional art objects. Further biographical details are not known to us. The Okanogan traditional territory spans the U.S.-Canada boundary in Washington and British Columbia.
