ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Young Goat is a colored pencil drawing by artist Bet Borgeson. It is part of her body of work that tell stories using animals, plants, and the landscape imagery. She calls this kind of composition “open narrative,” introducing story-like elements while leaving the exact meaning open for interpretation. This piece shows a small goat standing beneath an intricately branching tree. She suggests that this piece is about the balance between large and small, abundance and order. She notes, “Scale is best shown through contrast. Thus, I have chosen to juxtapose a small animal – in this case a small goat – with a large and exuberant tree. Adding this element of animal, the symbol I frequently use to suggest innocence, also seems to me to inject a seeing and feeling consciousness into the scene.”
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Mabton School District.
