ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Kore is part of artist Brenda Hemsing's series "Tree Pictures," captured using a primitive camera, and featuring double-exposed imagery and hand-coloring. Hemsing hopes to convey the symbolic power of trees, which she notes, "possess characteristics capable of personifying human emotion." The titles in this series are based on different mythical figures, and Kore represents the maiden form of the Greek goddess Persephone, who embodies "the inner soul of mother earth".
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Puyallup School District.
