Islands & Benches, 1987

Terry Reed
(American, born 1948)

Location: Brewster High School, Brewster

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Terry Reed is interested in "the contemplative quality of the ferryboat environment." Islands & Benches by Terry Reed suggests the inner reflection and daydreaming of ferry passengers. This is symbolized in part by the light and the water, as well as the transparency and reflections of the many ferry windows. Reed notes, “These conflicting perceptions and the captive nature of this ride can produce a mindset much like a dream… the mind separates from the body as our gaze wanders from the reflections on nearby glass panes to shimmering reflections more distantly viewed through that same glass.”

Islands & Benches is an infrared photograph taken by artist Terry Reed while riding the ferry to the San Juan Islands in Northwestern Washington. Infrared photography captures the glow of radiant energy not visible to the human eye.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Brewster School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
