ABOUT THE ARTWORK
My Secret Garden is part of a body of paintings by artist Alison Johnston inspired by her rural home on San Juan Island. This whimsical piece depicts the artist at work in her garden. She notes, “This painting grew directly out of the simple and pure act of digging in the spring soil, making way for the glorious tulips and primroses, which grow in their brilliant splendor each April and May in Washington.”
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Marysville School District.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Painter Alison Johnston creates still life, landscape and narrative paintings inspired by the northwest environment and her travels abroad.
Johnston was born in Massachusetts and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Cornish Institute in Seattle in 1981. She is based on San Juan Island, in North Puget Sound, Western Washington.
