Location: Salish Coast Elementary, Port Townsend
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Salish Coast Elementary School in Port Townsend has two paintings by Stallman Studio that explore color, form, and movement. The artist team invented “Canvas on Edge,” a technique that uses paint and canvas as sculpture. They hand-paint large, 4x100 feet, sheets of raw canvas and cut it up into strips. Each strip is placed on its edge and molded as part of the larger artwork. The cut edges of the canvas are like a line drawing. When you look at an angle, fields of color swirl and flow together as you move around the artwork. Stallman Studio believes color is therapy.
This artwork is part of a curated collection by Lele Barnett at Salish Coast Elementary School, on the Olympic Peninsula in Northwest Washington. The site is also a public library, YMCA, and an active town gathering place. The local art selection committee wanted the students and community to be excited about artists in and from their region. They also asked for fun and dramatic art that is colorful enough to brighten grey-sky days.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Port Townsend School District.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Artists Jason Hallman and Stephen Stum work together as Stallman Studio. They conceived a technique called “Canvas on Edge” in which they use paint and canvas as sculpture. They note, “The cut edge of the canvas creates an elevated line drawing and when seen at an angle, fields of color emerge as your perspective of the piece changes.” They are based on Whidbey Island, Northwestern Washington.
