Old World Series: Reds, 1992

(American, born 1939)
Location: Discovery Elementary, Sammamish
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Old World Series: Reds by artist Juliana Heyne is part of a series based on her travels to Eastern Europe in the early 1990s. She visited Prague, Budapest, and rural areas in the Czech Republic and Hungary. The red-tiled roofs common in Prague inspired this composition. She notes, "These countries were going through monumental and upsetting political changes during these years, and the kind of chaos and excitement that results from such changes strongly influenced the way I saw things. I was also profoundly moved by the age, beauty, and fragility of these cities."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Issaquah School District.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Seattle-based painter Juliana Heyne captures imagery based on her travels near and far. She is inspired by the beauty of aging cities, construction sites, and natural structures in the middle of nowhere. In her own words "No matter the subject matter, there's some kind of beauty at its core that draws me."
