ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Roger Nachman fused glass installation Discoveries represents microscopic images relating to the forensic sciences. The artwork is located at the Seattle Toxicology Division Headquarters of the Washington State Patrol. The labs provide services such as DNA testing and materials analysis related to crime investigations. Nachman notes that the tile designs are "representations of the seemingly abstract patterns and puzzle pieces that the forensic scientists see daily through their microscopes."

Discoveries is made up of four large glass panels, plus five individual fused glass pieces. There are eighteen smaller fused glass tiles within the four large window panels. The five fused glass pieces are located at the entrances to five different labs.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State Patrol.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Roger Nachman is a Seattle-based glass artist and designer. He creates fused, kiln-formed, and kiln-cast glass sculptures and installations for public spaces.

Nachman graduated from the University of Colorado. He lived and worked in Kyoto, Japan for eight years between 1973 and 1985, where he was an important part of the Studio Glass Movement in Japan. Nachman also teaches kilnworking techniques for glass around the U.S. and abroad.
