Twisting Arch, 1978

(Nationality unknown)

Location: Asotin High School, Asotin

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Twisting Arch is a sculpture created by artist Dennis Stewart. To create the shape, he bent eight stainless steel tubes at progressively sharper angles. This made an interlocking, twisted form inspired by the surrounding landscape. Stewart states, "The symbol of an arch or curved line is found throughout nature: in a mountain, a rainbow, a river, the path of the sun across the sky, the flight of a swallow, a waterfall, tall wheat in the wind and even in your hand. The arch also symbolizes a doorway to a new place or experience. The twisting arch represents the experience of life; the rising up from the earth and reaching for the sky; the constant changing and the eventual return to the earth."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Asotin-Anatone School District.
