ABOUT THE ARTIST
Late artist Manuel Izquierdo (1925-2009) created sculptures and prints characterized by expressive forms and narrative imagery.
Born in Madrid, Spain, Izquierdo's family fled after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and settled in Portland, Oregon in 1942. He was introduced to welding while working at the Kaiser Shipyards during World War II (1939-45). He earned a degree from the Museum Art School (now known as the Pacific Northwest College of Art) in Portland, Oregon, where he later taught for 46 years. In 1991, he received the Oregon Governor’s Arts Award.
