Entrance/Exit, 1993

Stephen Yates
(American, born 1952)

Location: Boston Harbor Elementary, Olympia

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Stephen Yates composed the painting Entrance/Exit to highlight a sense of movement, energy, and activity. Gestural brush strokes carry the viewer through light and dark areas. The artist notes that the title both suggests this movement through the painting and to a more symbolic meaning. He states, “What appears to be an Entrance is often also an Exit from another experience. As we change and grow, we must experience both Entrances and Exits and each leaving is also the beginning.”

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Olympia School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artist Stephen Yates creates paintings with bold, expressive strokes and abstract imagery. Inspired by landscapes, under water life, and the cosmos, his work investigates color relationships and the interaction of forms. Yates lives and works in Port Townsend, on the Olympic Peninsula in Northwestern Washington.
