The Neighborhood, 1993

Sally Sellers
(American, born 1951)

Location: Larchmont Elementary, Tacoma

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The Neighborhood is part of artist Sally Sellers' series of quilts composed with repeating imagery of houses. Sellers began the series after her young daughter moved from home to a nursing facility due to serious illness. Sellers notes that she created this body of work to challenge the concept of what a home is, and as a meditation on the instincts to nurture and protect. This piece features dynamic and unique colors, patterns, and textures. These compositional choices reflect the series' themes of individuality and wonder. She notes, "Nothing is certain, not even the promise behind a child's eyes. Embrace the unexpected. Try to rejoice in it. Learn. Live."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Tacoma School District.
