Parts to a Whole, 2025

Cable Griffith
(American, born 1975)

Location: Viewlands Elementary, Seattle

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Parts to a Whole by Cable Griffith depicts the Seattle neighborhood’s Carkeek Park, located on Puget Sound. The painting is inspired by nearly 500 photographs submitted by the Viewlands Elementary community. Griffith translated those photos, and their main colors, into simple drawings or "glyphs" using a process of pixelation, abstraction, and re-construction. They represent elements of the natural ecosystem, such as trees, logs, waves, stones, leaves, flowers, and more. The glyphs are both distinct elements and building blocks for the larger artwork. The painting reminds us of the delicate balance between an individual and their inseparable relationship to an interconnected whole of a strong community and ecosystem.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Seattle Public Schools.
