ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In Flow No. 009, Coral , Camilla Jerome visualizes disability as a fluid state. Here she has combined light-sensitive cyanotype paper with water from the Atlantic Ocean, salt, soap, and found coral fans in a form of camera-less photography. She notes, "We have good days and bad days that come and go like the ocean tide."

A cyanotype is a simple photo printing process in blue tones. It captures some information like basic shapes, while removing color, depth, and most details.

This artwork is part of a curated collection by Lucile Chich in October 2023 for the Kessler Center, in Puyallup, Western Washington. The collection is based on joy, color, and the inclusion of a marginalized population within the arts community. It was critical to the local Art Selection Committee that the collection celebrate artists who are experiencing disability. This could be physical, neurological, or intellectual. They also wanted the see artists who use the transformative powers of artmaking to transcend, to heal, to rejoice.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Puyallup School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Camilla Jerome is an inter-disciplinary artist from Massachusetts. Her photographic, installation, text, and video work ranges from autobiographical documentary imagery, to private performances, to experimental camera-less photography. Jerome’s work explores the intersections of disability, visuality, time, and gender. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Lesley College of Art and Design in Massachusetts.
