Location: Henrietta Lacks Health and Bioscience High School, Vancouver
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Samara is a suspended kinetic sculpture comprised of 16 aluminum maple seeds that rotate continually in a spiral formation. This pieces was created by artist team Kate Kaman and Joel Erland. Describing the inspiration for this piece, the collaborative artists note: "winged seed pods—known as whirligigs, helicopters, and other informal names—are called Samara by scientists. The maple seed represents the start of a new life. Much like flying whirligigs have the potential to grow into giant trees, each student at HeLa High School is full of great potential."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Evergreen School District.
