Luminous Reeds, 2010

Dan Corson
(American, born 1964)

Location: Cavelero Mid High School, Lake Stevens

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Dan Corson invites the viewer to interpret Luminous Reeds . Is it water with twisting, grassy reeds, or could it be shooting stars in the night sky? Luminous Reeds is inspired by the marshy, reedy areas that act as the transition between land and water. It symbolizes how high school also marks the transition between being a child and an adult. Corson considered the prow of a ship working its way through that area of reeds, before hitting land, that murky transition area. The reeds are also organized in the patterns of celestial constellations.

The 19 feet high by 17 ½ feet wide sculptural installation is made of one hundred and eighty 1-to-6-foot-long fluorescent yellow-green acrylic rods that are attached to a cobalt blue painted wall. The fluorescent rods appear to be electrified and glowing even in the daytime. At night, it is illuminated with ultraviolet lighting.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Lake Stevens School District.
