Small Grove of Trees, 2000
Robert Connell
(American, born 1947)
Location: Rochester Elementary School, Rochester
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Artist Robert Connell began his northwest landscape Small Grove of Trees on location using black Japanese sumi ink. Bringing the painting into his studio, Connell added color by layering gouache paint using a printmaking brayer. This piece is part of the artist's body of work that uses the negative space created by exposed, unpainted paper to imply water and sky. This technique brings together realistic and abstract elements in his compositions.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Rochester School District.
