(Vietnamese, born 1968)

Location: Clark College, Vancouver

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Journey #89: Caterpillar is part of artist Darlene Nguyen-Ely's series of sculptures that explore forms, structures and symbols of travel, movement, and evolution. The organic and machine shapes of ships and airplanes were a starting point. This piece combines simple, elegant forms found in both biological and machine-based systems.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Clark College.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Darlene Nguyen-Ely is a Washington-based artist who creates wood and mixed-media sculptures that explore material and form. Nguyen-Ely was eight years old when she escaped Saigon and the Vietnam War in 1975 with an uncle, brother, and sister. A key influence on her art is her memories from her homeland and childhood in Vietnam. Her art is also an effort to reconcile her childhood in Vietnam with her present life in the United States.
