The Scratch, 1998

Location: Washington State Arts Commission, Olympia
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
The Scratch is a freestanding ceramic sculpture by artist Steve Gardner that portrays the mythic figure of Atlas, who according to Greek legend carried the world on his shoulders. This piece explores the dynamic of dual or opposing natures, with contrasting imagery on either side. The front depicts Atlas knealing with the world in balance, while the the back depicts the figure stretching out and reaching, and Gardner suggests "perhaps he has grown tired of his thankless burden and has decided to lighten his load."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Stanwood School District.
