Sherry Markovitz
American (born 1947, died 2025)
Celebrated Seattle artist Sherry Markovitz (1947-2025) is best known for her elaborately detailed papier mâché and beaded sculpture. They often depict dolls or animal head trophies and investigate the symbolism of identity.
Markovitz grew up in Chicago. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ceramics and Art Education from the University of Wisconsin in 1969. She then moved to Seattle to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Washington, completed in 1975. Markovitz received the 2019 Twining Humber Award for lifetime artistic achievement.
