About the Artwork
Investigating the symbolism of identity, artist Sherry Markovitz's doll and animal head sculptures are informed by her drawing practice. Bear Drawing conveys the line and form of its subject through gestural strokes, overlaid onto ideogrammatic symbols.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Seattle Public Schools.
About the Artist
Celebrated Seattle artist Sherry Markovitz is best known for her elaborately detailed papier mâché and beaded sculpture, which often depict dolls or animal head trophies and investigate the symbolism of identity.
Markovitz received the 2019 Twining Humber Award for lifetime artistic achievement.
