Cascade Cradle, 1991

Gary Bates
(American, born 1946)

Location: Central Washington University, Ellensburg

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Gary Bates refers to his steel sculpture, titled Cascade Cradle as a "wind seismograph." Located at Central Washington University, a half-cone shaped element balances on the point of an upright cone. It is structured so that the top element spins as the surrounding air fluctuates. This kinetic movement changes the sculpture from something static into an instrument that responds to its environment. He states, "I hope it becomes the wristwatch, the calendar and the weatherman of Central Washington University, making the subtle and illusive forces of nature not more predictable but more concrete. I see it as a tool, an awareness sharpener, a sort of tap on the window of our consciousness."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Central Washington University.
