ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Artists Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo of Lead Pencil Studio were inspired to create Sign Post based on the presence of abandoned vintage signs in the nearby neighborhoods. These old signs are reminders and leftovers of Spokane's building boom and commercial growth in the mid-20th century. The 45-foot tall Sign Post sculpture looks like old commercial signs but what is it advertising?
The artwork is in the unusual location of a parking lot on the far northeastern edge of campus, near the Music and Performing Arts building. During the day, it points students towards the nearby Riverside State Park and Spokane River. At night, it is brilliantly lit up by LED lights (that only use 90 watts of power) and draws music performance attendees to the night sky.
It also features NASA images of the planet Saturn's moon Phoebe and an illustration of harmonic sound waves. These signs underscore the physical sciences, such as physics and astronomy, that explain how sound and light are delivered across huge distances. The artists note that they created Sign Post to remind you "of a sense of place and a link to the past which is fast disappearing".
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Community Colleges of Spokane.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lead Pencil Studio is an art and architecture studio founded by Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo in Seattle, Washington. They create site-specific installation art and non-functional architecture. Mihalyo says their work is “wedged between architecture—the practical art form—and artwork, which is a less practical form of creativity.”
Both Han and Mihalyo earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in architecture from the University of Oregon in Eugene.
