Quarried Marble, 1988

(American, born 1946, died 2007)

Location: Grays Harbor College, Aberdeen

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Quarried Marble is a painting by artist Jim Colbert. It features bold, geometric areas of color and shadow in an almost abstract composition. He based the image on the Yule quarry in Marble, Colorado. He notes that marble extracted from this quarry "went on to build the Lincoln Memorial and various other monuments and buildings in Washington D.C. and around the country." Geologists discovered the quarry in 1873. The Colorado-Yule Marble Company established the Yule quarry in 1905, which operated until 1941. The quarry reopened in 1990. It is still in production today.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Grays Harbor College.
