Fungus, Quinault, 1989

Location: Washington State Arts Commission, Olympia
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Artist Larry Bullis captured the photograph Fungus, Quinault along the south fork of the Quinault River in Olympic National Park on the west coast of Washington. It is part of a body of work looking at the beauty of nature amid ever-present human activity and industry. He notes, "The Olympic National Park is a kind of museum of nature, where we are supposed to be able to see nature as it is. This idea is predicated upon the belief, generally quite unconscious, that humanity is of one kind and nature of another, that the two stand in some manner of practical opposition to one another, and that it is thus possible to preserve nature as it was for us to see and enjoy in one place as we exploit it in another. In fact, this is not so. We are a part of nature, and as such, everything we do affects everything and everyone else."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Riverview School District.
