Life Sign, 2011
Katy Stone
(American, born 1969)
Location: Lake Washington Institute of Technology, Kirkland
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In Life Sign artist Katy Stone represents themes of life and interconnectedness. Stone layers cut metal to create repeating patterns and shapes found in nature, from forests, plants and roots to the body's vascular system of blood vessels. The green, red, and blue colors are found both in nature outdoors and in the interior of the body. Overall Life Sign looks like a raindrop or a leaf, or a heart. Stone notes that the artwork "expresses the idea of life at both the microscopic and macroscopic level, and symbolizes the concept of interconnectedness". The artwork's themes also connect the setting of the building, which has spectacular views of the surrounding trees and mountains, to the Health Sciences subjects taught within it.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Lake Washington Technical College.
