Michael Spafford

(American, born 1935)

Northwest artist Michael Spafford creates paintings and prints that translate mythological symbols and narratives into abstracted visual terms.

In 1959, Spafford received a Bachelor of Arts from Pomona College in California. In 1960, he received a Master of Arts from Harvard University in Massachusetts. He is a Professor Emeritus (1963-1994) of the University of Washington School of Art in Seattle. In 2019, he was honored with a Washington State Governor's Arts and Heritage Award, awarded by Governor Jay Inslee.
